Applying serum correctly is about more than getting the order right. Technique, timing, and quantity all affect how well it performs.
Cleanse First
Start with a thorough cleanse to remove surface debris, sunscreen residue, and buildup from the day or night. Applying serum to unclean skin forces it to work through a layer of impurities before it can reach the skin, which cuts into how well it performs. If a toner is part of your routine, apply it after cleansing and let it absorb for about 10 to 15 seconds before moving on.
Apply to Face and Neck
Dispense two to three drops into clean palms or onto fingertips, then press it gently across the face and neck with light, even pressure. The neck ages at roughly the same rate as the face and gets skipped far too often.
Let It Absorb
Wait 10 to 15 seconds before reaching for moisturizer. Applying moisturizer too soon can dilute the actives and cause pilling. If the serum still feels tacky after a minute, you're likely using too much. Drop back to two drops and see if that solves it.
Follow With Moisturizer
Once the serum has absorbed, apply moisturizer to seal in the actives and support the skin's barrier. This step isn't redundant: the serum treats, the moisturizer protects, and skipping it can leave skin more exposed to water loss, especially in dry or climate-controlled environments. In the morning, finish with SPF over the moisturizer, regardless of skin type or season.
